Abu Dhabi Classics to host the Trombone Trio of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Al Ain

Three members of the trombone section of the illustrious Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra are set to entice local audiences with their first-ever appearance in the emirate in a performance under the title When Art Meets Music, as part of the seventh edition of Abu Dhabi Classics international concert season.

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates and organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Classics programme continues to host captivating live performances as part of its new season running from October 2017 until April 2018, bringing outstanding contemporary artists from across the world to present unique genres of classical music to audiences.

As part of the Trombone Trio of the prestigious Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, brothers Nico Schippers and Martin Schippers are joined by Bart Claessens as part of the Trombone Trio. Accompanied by accomplished pianist Jeroen Bal, the Trio will explore the connection between music and visual arts through the medium of concert. The performance will take audiences through masterful renditions of famous pieces by established composers such as Modest Mussorgsky and Anton Bruckner.

During the concert that is set to take place on Thursday 9 November at the historic Bin Hamoodah Fort in Al Ain at 8pm, the Trombone Trio will offer performances of iconic pieces from Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms before going on to showcase legendary pieces that will lead audiences on a musical odyssey from the 17th century to the modern era.  Louis Couperin’s historic Three Dance Pieces will be reinterpreted for three trombones and start the chronological journey with a taste of French Baroque composition, followed by a rendition of Anton Bruckner’s famous 1847 piece Zwei Aequali.

Classical enthusiasts of prolific 19th century Hungarian composer Franz Liszt will be invited to enjoy an interpretation of his iconic arrangement of Ave Maria as well as Hungarian Rhapsody no. 11, before being swept into the delights of Nicola Ferro and Ilya Reijngoud through mesmerising iterations of their 1970s compositions A Friend For a Friend and Ballade respectively.

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is one of the leading orchestras in the world. Critics have continuously lauded its unique sound since its initial formation in 1888, citing it as a stand-out among thousands of other orchestral productions. The orchestra is made up of 120 players hailing from over 20 countries, who work in tandem with one another and reflect a high individual calibre as well as a great sense of mutual trust and confidence in the creation of their music.
