Abu Dhabi Publishing Forum attracts strong regional and international participation

The second edition of the Abu Dhabi Publishing Forum (ADPF), organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), is preparing to host a large number of regional and international participants.

The event takes place from 28th to 30th January, 2019, at Manarat Al Saadiyat under the theme “The Future of Digital Publishing: Technologies and Challenges – the Global Experience”. It will feature prominent publishing experts and specialists from around the world, as well as Arab and international organisations and influential companies in the publishing industry.

The forum’s main sessions will present about 50 speakers, with others taking part in the scheduled workshops. The programme includes a series of talks and workshops offering comprehensive analyses of the digital and audio publishing industries, as well as a showcase of leading projects and initiatives in the field.

Abdulla Majid Al Ali, Acting Executive Director of the Dar Al Kutub Sector, DCT Abu Dhabi, said: “Abu Dhabi Publishing Forum has attracted some of the biggest regional and international names in the publishing industry, confirming that the event, in just its second year, is growing in significance and recognition.

“By bringing together this collection of leading experts, we aim to study and evaluate the prospects and issues facing the publishing industry in the UAE and wider region as we move into the digital age to position ourselves at the forefront of innovation in this field.”

Speakers will explore a number of pressing topics in the publishing world. The ‘Digital Publishing Industry in the Arab World’ session deals with various points related to digital and audio publishing in the Arab world, as well as ways to develop them and the relevant impact of mobile phones.

‘The Latest Digital and Audio Publishing Technologies’ is a session that focuses on cutting-edge sound systems and reading devices that support the audio and digital publishing industries.

ADPF will also feature a session discussing the role of non-profit organisations (NGOs) in promoting digital and audio publishing, highlighting relevant ongoing and future initiatives. It will also explore digital publishing at the Arab Cultural Summit 2019, and international organisations’ support of local and individual contributors to the field.

Furthermore, a specialised talk will showcase the latest digital and audio publishing technologies, as well as offer insights into how to combat book piracy, while another session will deal with how sponsorship and advertising play a vital role in digital and audio publishing.

Offering practical applications of the ADPF themes, the ADPF workshops will take in 10-15 participants per session. A workshop entitled ‘Publishing on Amazon: Mechanisms and Prospects’ teaches everything one need to know about uploading, publishing and promoting books across the world’s largest publishing platform.

‘How to Create an Audio Book’ is a workshop that highlights the features that make it feasible to turn books into audio scripts and teaches about audio production. The third workshop addresses online copyright piracy, where participants learn how to protect themselves from this widespread problem, and about intellectual property rights in the world and the Middle East.

Titled ‘The Future of Publishing: Reading in 2015’, the fourth workshop aims to predict rapid technological developments and their impacts on publishing, while also underlining self-publishing, its development and the introduction of artificial intelligence into the industry.

The ‘Interactive Applications and Children’s Books’ workshop sheds light on the design and development of applications that engage children and capture their interest.

Saeed Hamdan Al Tunaiji, Director of the Publishing Department at DCT Abu Dhabi, said: “The broad participation at this year’s ADPF indicates its importance as a well-established platform that brings together publishing experts from around the globe to discuss urgent issues and developments. This activity also underscores its regional and international role in addressing the latest developments and challenges in the publishing industry, and the role of technology and prospects of utilising it.

“In this year’s edition, we will present global success stories of projects that prevailed in the face of challenges to reach a wide audience of youth and children. The forum comprises three integrated elements; where the informative talks and engaging workshops are complemented by the participation of regional and international contributors and influencers in the world of publishing.”
