Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award presented for the first time in the region

The Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award, a visionary annual award established in 1992 to recognise the work and contributions of modern day art patrons, has taken place in the region for the first time. Rajeeb and Nadia Samdani, recipients of the 2017 Award were honoured at a ceremony held in Dubai to recognise their work with Dhaka Art Summit and contribution to the arts through the Samdani Art Foundation. An initiative to increase awareness and appreciation of contemporary art across Bangladesh, and broaden international exposure for the country’s artists and architects, the Samdani Art Foundation is also responsible for the establishment of the Samdani Art Award.

The ceremony took place on the 13th of September at Concrete, a multi-disciplinary space at the intersection of art and architecture designed to host museum-grade exhibitions, and located in Alserkal Avenue.  The evening was hosted by Montblanc Cultural Foundation chairmen Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, where the Samdanis received a Montblanc trophy and a €15,000 donation to the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

Commenting on the event, Montblanc Cultural Foundation co-chairman Sam Bardaouil said: “We are delighted to honour Nadia and Rajeeb Samdani for their invaluable contribution to the arts, and to celebrate the newly established Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award for the region. The Montblanc Cultural Foundation is dedicated to recognising the significant efforts of those who strive to make art and culture more accessible to a wider public and we look forward to continuing this development across the flourishing art scenes within these diverse regions.”

The Samdani’s are among 17 winners around the world selected by an international jury of art experts and practitioners brought together by the Montblanc Cultural Foundation.  Candidates are evaluated on their history of personal commitment to the arts, and enabling wider access to cultural projects.

Guests at the Dubai reception had the chance to enjoy a live calligraphy performance and discover the latest Patron of Art Edition, a collection of limited edition writing instruments dedicated to Scipione Borghese, a 17th century art collector and one of the greatest patrons of Baroque art.

“It is an honour for us to receive this prestigious award for something that Rajeeb and I hold close to our hearts.  The Samdani Foundation has helped many emerging artists and we are grateful to the Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award for acknowledging the efforts and commitment of everyone involved,” said Nadia Samdani, Co-Founder and President of The Samdani Foundation.

Nadia and Rajeeb Samdani join a long list of worthy honourees presented with the award in the past, including theatre director and playwright Robert Wilson, film producer and founder of the LUMA Foundation in Arles Maja Hoffmann, award-winning musician, composer and record producer Quincy Jones, renowned curator and founder of FLORA artist residency in Bogota José Roca, and Italian architect Renzo Piano.
