Sharp rise in hotel bookings using tablets and smartphones for GCC travellers

Travellers from GCC are switching to tablets and smartphones when making their hotel reservations, with over 70 percent of actual bookings in January this year using these devices, compared to 54 percent during the same period in 2016.

HotelsCombined, the leading accommodation comparison platform, has noted that the number of travellers who use their mobile devices and tablets when searching for hotels has risen to 82 percent in the beginning of this year, against 73 percent in the same month last year.

This means travel sales booked using desktop or laptop continue to decline, from 27 percent last year to only 18 percent this year.

“Today’s travellers from GCC are moving away from desktops or laptops when making their travel plans because of the quick and easy access to their mobiles and tablets. Travellers rely on their devices as they offer them simpler search and easier steps when booking. It is particularly convenient for booking short holidays, therefore, we see an increase in the number of mobile bookings especially in destinations from our region,” said Amer AlHalabi, regional manager of HotelsCombined MENA.

“We expect to see the trend continue with tablets and smartphones leading the way for hotel bookings as more travelers begin to use a tablet or mobile as their primary device,” added AlHalabi, consequently travel companies that are relying on web-based services must develop or upgrade their own application or mobile site to cater to travelers’ demands and stay competitive in the travel industry.

Demographics are also a contributing factor, said AlHalabi, with digital-native millennials now participating in the booking decision process and usually favouring smartphones as their device of choice.

HotelsCombined is a world leading hotel meta-search platform used by over 400 million travelers each year. It has partnered with thousands of booking sites such as Booking.com, Expedia and Agoda to create a one-stop hotel search engine for travelers. Instead of visiting these booking websites one-by-one, HotelsCombined simply compares them all in just one search, showing users a complete range of hotels and prices to choose from.

HotelsCombined’s website is also available as a mobile application for both iOS and Android, allowing users to find the best room rate in one quick and easy search.  For more details about HotelsCombined, please visit www.hotelscombined.ae.
