STAATSKAPELLE DRESDEN RETURNS TO THE EMIRATE AS PART OF ABU DHABI CLASSICS CONCERT SERIES

Leading German orchestra the Staatskapelle Dresden is returning to Abu Dhabi to perform two concerts at Emirates Palace for one of the highlights of an outstanding season of Abu Dhabi Classics.

In a unique performance for the Abu Dhabi audience, legendary pianist Rudolf Buchbinder will also conduct the world-famous orchestra during the two concerts as they perform all five of Beethoven’s piano concertos over the evenings of Tuesday 5th December and Wednesday 6th December.

The orchestra will perform the complete cycle of five piano concertos by Ludwig van Beethoven. This experience will allow the audience to understand and appreciate the art of Beethoven through the genre that represents the best of Viennese classic music. His piano concertos combine the individual expression of the piano with the magnificent and full sound of the orchestra. The genesis of the five piano concertos range between 1795 and 1811 and express the very spirit of classical music in Vienna, Austria at the turn of the century.

Established in 1548 in Dresden, Germany, the Staatskapelle Dresden has a prestigious history and reputation as one of the world’s best orchestras. In 2007, the European Cultural Foundation honoured the orchestra for the preservation of the world’s musical heritage and just four years ago, it was voted Best Orchestra in the World by a panel of 50 international music critics.

Jan Nast, Director of Staatskapelle Dresden, said: “We are immensely pleased to come back to Abu Dhabi after performing there in 2015. We have followed the musical development of the country and of Abu Dhabi Classics in particular since its inception and we are honoured to be part of this development. For us, playing the complete Beethoven Cycle in Abu Dhabi is a wonderful experience. It is an artistically ambitious project. Beethoven is the composer of humanity, of friendship and we want to celebrate in Abu Dhabi our friendship between the city of Dresden and the capital of the UAE.”

Buchbinder, widely regarded as one of the greatest living pianists, has appeared in concerts all over the world with renowned orchestras and conductors for more than 50 years. He was admitted to the Vienna Musikhochschule at five-years-old and remains the youngest student to gain entrance in the school’s history.

He has more than 100 recordings to his credit, including the complete cycle of Beethoven sonatas and concertos, the complete Mozart piano concertos, all of Haydn’s works for piano, both Brahms concertos, and all of the rarely performed Diabelli Variations collection written by 50 Austrian composers. The 18-disc set of Haydn’s works earned him the Grand Prix du Disque.

This season’s Abu Dhabi Classics programme, which runs until May 2018, is organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and produced by Flash Entertainment. Tickets for both performances are available at www.ticketmaster.ae and all Virgin Megastores across the UAE with discounted packaged tickets to attend both evenings starting from AED 165 per evening.
