Abu Dhabi Art Celebrates 10th Edition with Arts in Motion

To commemorate its tenth edition, Abu Dhabi Art has organised Arts in Motion, a series of transformative performances held during this week’s fair at Manarat Al Saadiyat.

Arts in Motion, is a series of dynamic performances commissioned and choreographed in response to four masterpieces in the permanent collection of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT). This week’s performances, by the Sima Dance Company, aim to encapsulate the intangible and create a harmonious union between visual and rhythmic gestures, enticing the spectator to consider how a disparate dance discipline can draw inspiration from 20th century artworks.

Arts in Motion openEd with Yves Klein’s blue monochromatic abstraction. This painting entitled IKB 113, rendered in 1959, is a critical example of the artist’s Blue Period. Next was Jean Tinguely’s kinetic sculpture titled Pour Lyon II which is a Dadaist exploration of absurdity in which mindless materialistic overproduction is at the forefront of his creative process. This will be followed by Joana Vasconcelos’s Viuva Lamego piece titled Tetromino sec XVII, as part of a Cabrera series (2013), is a collaborative example of what happens when a historical Portuguese manufacturer founded in 1849 and an artist come together. Finally, titled La Penna di Hu (The Peacock Feather),is the work of Frank Stella. Here, he confronts the nature of a canvas by abandoning conventions and unpacking composition through shapes, colours and materiality.
